About this site

socialgeotagging.com is all about exploring web and mobile location services and ideas based on the phenomena called GeoTagging....

There are three core areas which we will initially address:

  • Explore the provision of location based content both commercial and community based
  • Discuss how users can best share information, create community, and generally push the boundaries within and around a geo-spatial context
    ยท
  • Investigate the rules and schema's required to define, develop and connect meeting and social networking tools

GeoTagging has developed due to the increasing availably of GPS capable devices and the increasing numbers of online location projects and applications such as geocaching and Flickr.

It is now clear that the market place is poised to achieve a critical mass in the availability of GPS enabled consumer devices. As Nokia alone expects to sell 35 Million GPS Phones in 2008 while the iPhone is now GPS enabled.

I have a number of  reasons for my own interest in social geotagging.

As a web developer I have worked on a number of projects that really only have been made possible due to geotagging, including work on a mobile location services concept.

As a consumer I really connect with the potential of this technology to enable me to communicate with friends and family in a way that is breathtaking in its scope. While the potential for art, tourism and general culture will be as varied as the interests of the creators of content themselves.

Please feel free to get involved in this endevour. Let us know what you are doing in this field or even your general thoughts and opinion.
